CENTRAL OKLAHOMA COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY COMMUNITY ACTION MONTH

Shawnee Mayor Proclaims May 2017 as Community Action Month in Shawnee, OK

Accepting the proclamation from Mayor, Richard Finley are COCAA staff: Sara Dame, Douglas Gordon, Cory Swearingen, Tracy Izell and Tracy Meeuwsen.

The City of Shawnee has proclaimed the month of May as 'Community Action Month' as a way to celebrate the work that community action agencies, like COCAA, have been doing in helping people, changing lives and building communities.

The Community Action Program was established under President Lyndon Johnson's Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. The proposal created the Office of Economic Opportunity, a cabinet-level agency which was led by Johnson's Chief of Staff, Sargent Shriver. Shriver had successfully trail-blazed President John Kennedy's Peace Corps since its inception in 1961.

Central Oklahoma Community Action Agency (COCAA), formerly Community Action Inc., started in Shawnee in March 1968 after the City Council voted to invite the program into the city. In 1998, as the agency continued to grow and serve more communities, the name was changed to more accurately reflect its status. Today, the agency serves six counties in central Oklahoma; Cleveland, Lincoln, Logan, Payne, Pottawatomie and Seminole.

In 2016, from funds donated and granted, COCAA helped more than 400 people and families with their utility bills or rent. "To still be serving our communities after 53 years is quite an accomplishment", says Barbara Loudermilk, Executive Director. "However, we can not just reflect on the past; we have to keep moving forward. This means that we have to constantly evaluate, and re-evaluate our programs and the needs of the community and develop new working partnerships with other agencies. To continue to be successful and attract new programs and funding, we have to be flexible and willing to adapt. COCAA is ready and willing", adds Loudermilk.
